Series of resignations at Infinity Ward

Posted by herald On April - 15 - 2010

Though Modern Warfare 2 was the most successul launch in the history of role playing games, but the developer failed to hold tight its team of designers.
call_of_duty_modern_warfare_2_
The latest report comes that the two lead designers of Infinity Ward tabled their resignations.

Last month the founders of Infinity Ward, Vince Zampella and Jason West, sued their parent company Blizzard-Activision. They were earlier fired by the company for breach of contract.

After the sacking of Vince and Jason, Infinity Ward has bled about 11 staff members in protest. Most of the employees were the important part of the company.

More interesting is that the staff members continued quitting the organization even after Activision promised to distribute bonuses to those who remain employed.

The drama further speaks different story. The two founding fathers of Infinity Ward are on the way working hard on next venture, aptly named “Respawn Entertainment”.

The twist continues. Electronic Arts, the rival of Activision, recently announced of an official deal to be the sole distributor for Respawn Entertainment.

So here’s the deal, as many of you know, COD4 and Windows 7 x64 don’t get along very well. More specifically it seems that PunkBuster is the one that’s not playing nice. I’ve tried all the different “fixes” you see online and none of them work.

The error that most of us get is something like “Windows API Error ######

It’s something to do with punkbuster and Windows 7. PunkBuster has already stated that they have absolutely no plans on fixing the issue until Windows 7 is released to the public. So for all the people who are BETA testing W7 they are basically telling you to go pound sand. The weird thing is WaW works fine, so it’s obviously not a huge deal and would require minimum work on the part of evenbalance to fix the problem.

So, how can you still play COD4 on Windows 7?

I use cracked servers and it works beutifully,  the NoBS servers are the ones I use, I listed the one I use the most below. BTW, I have a legit key, in fact I have two legit keys, so don’t accuse me of being a pirate.

If IW makes Evenbalance fix the damn issue for us, then I will happily remove this post. The community has begged and pleaded Evenbalance to help us but they don’t give a damn, so unless IW gives them a push I doubt we will see any help.

In the meantime, here is the server I play on using COD4 AND Windows 7 x64. You can search gametracker for others, this just happens to be my favorite server.

Here’s a list of the usual error codes given when Call of Duty crashes, for the sake of search engines and allowing people to find this post:

API Kick 131124:

Known cause: BF2Amp
Solution: Don’t use it

Known cause: PowerStrip
Solution: Get the latest version. Old versions of PS cause this kick.

API Kick 131126:

Known cause: Researching - Contact Evenbalance Support for troubleshooting - EvenBalance Support Ticket
Solution: Unknown

API Kick 131127:

Known cause: Researching - Contact Evenbalance Support for troubleshooting - EvenBalance Support Ticket
Solution: Unknown

API Kick 131129

Known cause: Trojan.Horse.BackDoor.Agent.BA
Solution: ID and remove it using AVG or other AV program (AVG recommend, currently only AV detecting this 11/28/05)

In NOTEPAD write this:

CODE
@echo off SET FILE=sqll echo y | cacls c:\windows\system32\*FILE*.dll /g Everyone:f attrib -r -s -h C:\Windows\system32\*FILE*.dll ren C:\Windows\system32\*FILE*.dll *FILE*.old del C:\Windows\system32\*FILE*.old

Than change the *FILE* to the filename infected and save this as REMOVE.BAT file. Run it in normal mode and the trojan BackDoor.Agent.BA is OUT.

Now, the hard part appears to be finding the name of the dll. The dll is write protected, and is unable to be deleted normally. Try the free version of AGV to tag the DLL. Also check out http://www.symantec.com/…/backdoor.agent.b.html

Known cause: Proxy.L Trojan

I was reading the comments on this post and saw one of the guys made some pretty decent observations about the new perks that were seen in the first trailer for Modern Warfare 2. So, here’s what the guy posted:

So most of us had the feeling the release date was going to be 11.10.09 because some game dealers had the release date set last month, but nobody knew if it was the retailer trolling COD fans, a slip up by the sites webmaster, or an intentional leak by IW to create buzz. The same thing actually happen with COD5 and, like this time, it too turned out to be the correct release date.

So anyway, the date has been confirmed and they have released a trailer, the trailer defiantly leaves the viewer hungry for more which is a bad thing for us and a good thing for IW. You may watch the trailer here. If you pause at specific areas you can kind of make out some stuff, I definitely noticed either a tank or maybe the back end of a helicopter…so sad that I put this much viewing effort into this. Here are some screens:

Just when I was ready to give World at War some props

>> discuss it more in the forum <<

world at warSo as many of you know I uninstalled World at War last month and never really thought twice about it until my friend called me a few days ago to tell me they released the new map pack. So against my gut feeling I went ahead and re-installed the game.

The first thing I noticed was that I had to start again, from rank 1. Why is that, exactly? Aren’t our stats stored server side? Or are they stored locally? I could have sworn they were stored server side which would beg the question why do we have to re-rank up when it’s re-installed? Shouldn’t it automatically give us our rank back when we connect to their server? Furthermore, I *SHOULD* be on my 3rd prestige but Treyarch purged a ton of accounts without explanation about a month after release, you guys remember that? Yea, I signed on one day and all of my rank/stats were POOF gone. There were like 10 gazillionbillion threads about it on the official Call of Duty forums. Treyarch, to my knowledge, never gave any explanation or apology. It would have been nice to at leats get an apology like “Hey, we had some server errors and the  75 hours of playtime you had has disappeared, you’re going to have to start again, sorry.”. No apology, no explanation. F you too, Treyarch.

So I digress, last night I played COD5 for the first time in a really long time and I must say it wasn’t bad, the new maps are pretty cool too. It seems they fixed the terrible  browser issues. I didn’t notice if they fixed the bug where nades stick in the trees when you throw them, did they finally fix that bug?

Oh, they also fixed the custom maps issue, before any custom map you wanted to play on it could only download at like 12KB per second so it would take 20min+ to download a custom map. Also, unlike IW, they don’t have the browser set to automatically filter custom servers which is really cool. IW kind of shit on the custom servers and community by doing that. Granted it’s easy to tell the browser to show all servers but there are a lot of noobs out there who have no clue.

Anyhow, back to my profile trouble, last night I played up to rank 8 and went to bed, today I got on and I was rank 1 again. I assumed it was just the server I was on tonight, must have been one of those custom servers with custom ranks, right? Wrong.  After playing S&D today for about 20min, up to rank 4, I wanted to change my graphic settings so I exited the game and when I re-started it I was back to rank 1 again with the settings back to how they were before I had just changed them. So now it was pretty clear that not only was it not saving my rank and stats, it’s failing to save the control and graphic settings as well.

I just really don’t know WTF is wrong with this game, how can you F up so bad? It’s just terrible coding, I really don’t know what else to say. There seem to be bugs and crashes everytime I turn around and it literally makes the game un-playable. I finally uninstalled the game again tonight for the last time, there is just no winning with World at War. I wash my hands, I am done! The IW coded Call of Duty 6 will be out in no time, until it’s out I’ll play my trusty COD4.

P.S. Hey, IW, hows about some screens already? You’re F’ing killing us here with the lack of details and info :(

I can’t put into words how happy I am that IW is doing Call of Duty 6. I hope Activision has learned a lesson form all of this. Call of uty 4 was an epically successful game, why they snatched the dev rights away from IW and gave them to Treyarch after such a huge hit is beyond me. Treyarch even got to use IW’s game engine and they STILL managed to F’d it up, I mean wow.

PS3, 360, and PC players together on Multiplayer?

Posted by admin On February - 19 - 2009

Why can’t this be done? I’ve seen it discussed a few times and never really came away with a real answer. Ironically, it usually deteriorates into a flame war about who is more skilled. Which if the idea was ever implemented we would have our answer.

Usually the answer I see given is something to do with servers and requiring too much effort on everyones part. In other words Sony, or whoever pays to host the PS3 servers would have to allow PC users to eat their bandwidth and likewise for PC server owners and Microsoft’s servers.

So is that it? Sony, Microsoft, and PC server owners are too stingy to cooperate with each other? I actually have no doubt that most all PC servers would have no problem with 360/PS3 players coming on. I think the real people holding it up would probably be Sony and Microsoft, two pretty shitty companies as far as customer treatment goes, especially Sony.

I just fail to accept that something can’t be done about this. I for one have 5 different friends that play Call of Duty regularly. Two are on PC, 1 is on PS3, and 2 on 360. All I’ve ever wanted is to be able to play a game together with everyone, is that really so much to ask? We can send men to the moon but we can’t play a damn game of Call of Duty together on the same server? Bullshit.

Give Feedback on Modern Warfare 2 Via Twitter!

Posted by admin On February - 19 - 2009

I’ve been advocating the power of Twitter pretty hardcore recently, especially the value in using it as a conversation tool and more importantly tracking those conversations and using the feedback contained within. That philosphy gave birth to http://twitter.infinityward.com . A Twitter web-app for tracking conversations and feedback for Modern Warfare 2 we’ve been developing behind the scenes.

The #MW2 app went live earlier today Yesterday, and within an hour has officially become the #1 most talked about topic on Twitter (just behind American Idol). I was blown away with the response to our first question, “Name one thing you’d like to see in Modern Warfare 2″ .

However, the ability to see real-time feedback and conversations about Modern Warfare 2 feeding through the app is only the beginning. The best part is the ability to vote on suggestions and rise in the ranks on the Leaderboards. Allowing us to quickly check the top rated suggestions, and reach out to the users with the best suggestions to hopefully include them in future events, beta tests, or community days.

How can you participate?

First and foremost, you can follow me on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/fourzerotwo) and keep an eye out for the next question. It will also be visible at all times at http://twitter.infinityward.com under CURRENT QUESTION.

When a question is asked, all you have to do is tweet your answer / suggestion along with #MW2 .

What is #MW2?

#MW2 is the official Hashtag for Modern Warfare 2. Which means, anytime I,or anyone else, is talking about Modern Warfare 2 on Twitter, we’ll mark it with #MW2 so it can be tracked and included on the http://twitter.infinityward.com live feed as well as searched for on Twitter.

#MW2 Leaderboards

Once you’ve thrown your suggestion or comment about Modern Warfare 2 into the Live Feed, you can track and vote on other peoples suggestions, and track the top users on the #MW2 Leaderboard. It’s a great way to get recognized in the community and I’ll be using it to identify community members to reach out to in Call of Duty / Infinity Ward future events and projects.

Feedback on the App

This is a fairly unique social media experiment in terms of using it to solicit feedback for game design. So any comments, suggestions, or feedback on how to make the #MW2 app even better is always appreciated. I’m always looking for new ways to reach out to our players and strike up a conversation. Feel free to drop me a line at robert.bowling@fourzerotwo.com with any inquiries about the web app, or how you can help.

You like to blog? Want to have your posts on COD6.ORG?

Posted by admin On February - 12 - 2009

UPDATE: I went ahead and opened up registration. If you would like to post on here simply signup, make your post, and submit it. I’ll check it out and make sure it’s a decent post and then approve it for the front page. And yes, you may add a link or banner at the end of your posts provided it’s to a relevant site.

——————-

Are you or one of your clan members a blogger? Would you like to have your posts seen on the COD6.ORG blog? Depending on your writing abilities, which don’t have to be very good to match or exceed mine, I may be open to it.

Obviously the posts need to be about one of the Call of Duty versions, preferably 4, 5, or 6. You are welcome to re-post a story or article that you have already posted on your site but you will have to add some unique content to it.

I’m also looking to get some graphic work done for this site and forum, I will hire a professional graphic artist if I need to but I’d rather spend the $100-$500 on something more worth while. This site gets a good amount of traffic (2,000+ visitors a day) and it’s only going up. I’m sure we could work out a deal to show your clan or server advertisement on the site. Sort of like how I threw a plug for the DoD server in one of my posts, the server is dead right now but it fills up from about 7PM - 2AM. You could have an ad like that sitewide, or maybe some other type of ad for your clan recruiting efforts.

Anyway, if you’re interested just leave a comment on this post and I’ll get in touch with you.

Oh BTW, Activision confirmed yesterday what we already knew: Modern Warfare 2 Confirmed

Activision/Blizzard has confirmed that - as we said in December - Infinity Ward will be taking the development task for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

President and CEO of Activision Publishing, Mike Griffith, made the definitive statement, “We will also release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward” during Activision/Blizzard’s recent earnings call.

As expected, this was not the only announcement of an old IP being pushed further in order to provide security for the company in what looks like a financially grim 2009 for all.

Griffin also said, “Starting with the Guitar Hero franchise, we will launch a major restage of the business with all new differentiated Guitar Hero products, plus the launch of DJ Hero, a line extension that enhances and extends the franchise. We will be sharing more details with you about our new Guitar Hero lineup and DJ Hero games in the future.”

Am I the only one who thinks Treyarch sucks?

Posted by admin On January - 11 - 2009

Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the minority when it comes to hating Treyarch. I haven’t been to a COD forum for sometime now, last time I was on one everyone had just found out Treyarch was making COD5 and they were expressing their disgust not only for Treyarch but for WW2 as well. It was pretty clear the community wanted another modern warfare, I wonder whos idea it was to basically say FU to the community and make another WW2 theme against the majority of our wishes?

You may be asking “what’s your beef with cod5?” Allow me to name a few of the things off…

  1. After updating the servers list, you have to actually close down the game and reload it otherwise you can’t enter a server because of the famous “server authentication error”. I can see having some bugs when the game first comes out, but the game has been out now for months and the browser is STILL broken. What kind of preschool company would allow such a huge bug to remain without patching it?
  2. The sound. I think no explanation is needed.
  3. Search & Destroy can’t determine the actual winner. Say you’re playing S&D to 7 and one team has 7 and the other has 0, if the losing team wins the final match they win the whole thing. Perhaps this is something that should have been fixed in the first patch? I mean no rush, just one of your game modes is completely broken, take your time Treyarch.
  4. Auto-climb was annoying in COD4 but it was just something everyone had to accept. In COD5 you CONSTANTLY find yourself getting hung up on stupid crap. For example sometimes you will be running through a field and all the sudden your forward movement stops and you’re trying to figure out what’s happening only to look down and see you’re “caught” on a little rock or stick. In COD4 this isn’t a problem because the game would simply let you walk over or around this small object.

I could go on but what’s the point? Treyarch doesn’t care because they’re too busy counting the money they made off of us. What about Activision? You think they will reward Treyarch with another COD title after this one? I would hope not. They should have never taken the rights away from IW to begin with. Why would you look at the huge sucess of COD4 and then turn around and give the next title dev rights to Treyarch after IW did such a good job?

I should say that it’s not ALL bad from Treyarch. They added the friends option which is cool. The prestige option like COD4 consoles had was cool until the power rank servers came out which totally ruined the whole idea. Other than those two thinks I can’t honestly say I like anything else about it. I’ve already become sick of COD5 and gone back to COD4. Bad part is I installed Windows 7 yesterday and found out that COD4 and Windows 7 don’t get along so I’m forced to play COD5. It’s actually Punkbuster that doesn’t work with Windows 7 but don’t even get me started on how worthless Punkbuster is, they’re worse than Treyarch.

EDIT:

I gotta give credit when it’s due, the second patch for WaW certainly seems to have fixed a ton of problems. Funny enough they fixed the power up exploit which I never took advantage of, now I have to start at rank 1 when I decide to reinstall(just reformatted windows).

This October comes the challenge of Modern Warfare and Battlefield: Bad Company. Medal of Honor of Electronic Arts is being released on October 12 and it will challenge both the games for the top spot in the FPS genre.

Last week at E3 gaming event the stills and multi-player footage were released. The footage bound to bring comparison with the MW2 and BBC2.

The styles of the game is similar to the MW2 and BBC2, but MoH appears to concentrate on points and not focus on kills as MW2 does.

Below is the footage of Medal of Honor:
